Something You Can Do Today – The Four-Fold Way

Many times, we are paralyzed by the thought of how massive a particular change initiative might be. This is one reason why many choose to do nothing, even when they instinctively know that doing nothing will give the same undesired result. For me, I find it easier to take small steps. Remember, any journey consists of many small steps and begins with only one. Whenever I want the world outside of me to be different, I simply start by changing the world inside of me. “Personal work” is what I call it. By addressing my own personal thoughts and actions, the outside world begins to take on subtle changes. Whenever I find something ‘unpleasant’, I simply go deep inside to nurture whatever needs addressing within me. Personal work never fails me. If you are interested in enhancing your own personal work, one suggestion would be to read The Four-Fold Way: Walking the Paths of the Warrior, Teacher, Healer, and Visionary by Angeles Arrien. I incorporated Angeles’s research into my personal work because she focuses on wholeness and 4 aspects of self that serve me.

The Way of the Warrior or Leader is to show up, or choose to be present. Being present allows us to access the human resources of power, presence, and communication. We express the way of the Leader through appropriate action, good timing, and clear communication.

VisionarysmThe Way of the Visionary or Creative Problem Solver is to tell the truth without blame or judgment. Truthfulness, authenticity, and integrity are keys to developing our vision and intuition. We express the way of the Visionary through personal creativity, goals, plans, and our ability to bring our life dreams and visions into the world.

healersmThe Way of the Healer or Caretaker is to pay attention to what has heart and meaning. Paying attention opens us to the human resources of love, gratitude, acknowledgment, and validation. We express the way of the Healer through our attitudes and actions that maintain personal health and support the welfare of our environment.

teachersmThe Way of the Teacher or Counselor is to be open to outcome, not attached to outcome. Openness and non-attachment help us recover the human resources of wisdom and objectivity. We express the way of the Teacher through our constructive communication and informational skills.

The Four-Fold Way is a great place to start for any change initiative. All change begins with self.
